EdwinPowell Hubble was born in Missouri in 1889, the son of an insurance executive, and the family moved to Chicago nine years later. He began his PhD in astronomy at Chicago University in 1914, the same year the First World War began. He finished early in 1917 and was invited by George Ellery Hale, founder of the MountEdwinPowell Hubble (1889-1953) Edwin Hubble, for whom the Hubble Space Telescope is named, was one of the leading astronomers of the twentieth century. His discovery in the 1920s that countless galaxies exist beyond our own Milky Way galaxy revolutionized our understanding of the universe and our place within it.
